The Lane Cove rooms are at 2 Austin Street, directly opposite the Lane Cove Library and a few metres from Longueville Road. If you are coming from the village it is a walk of two or three minutes, and the parking behind the library is the easiest option in the middle of the day.

Lane Cove sends a particular mix of problems through the door. There are the desk-and-commute necks and low backs from St Leonards and the city, the shoulders and elbows of a suburb that plays a lot of tennis, and the knees and Achilles tendons that come with living on a hillside — the stairs down to Tambourine Bay and the streets off Burns Bay Road are their own kind of training load. Lane Cove also has a lot of people in their thirties and forties carrying small children, which is its own demand on a back.

A first appointment is mostly questions and movement testing: where the pain is, what makes it worse, what it stops you doing, and how it has behaved over weeks rather than days. From there you should leave knowing what is proposed, roughly how long it is expected to take, and what would mean changing the plan.

Worth bringing: any imaging or specialist letters you already have, a list of medications, and the shoes you actually walk or train in. If the pain is new and severe, follows a significant fall, or comes with numbness, weakness, fever or any change in bladder or bowel control, see a doctor first — that is a medical assessment, not a treatment question.

The nearest alternative if Lane Cove does not suit you is the Freshwater side, about 14 kilometres away across the Spit.

Coping with the physical strain of fertility treatment

12:10 pm 9 April 2025 Christine Shen 0 Comments

Fertility treatment can bring tension, tiredness and discomfort as well as emotional stress. Some people use acupuncture as a relaxing complement to their medical care during this demanding time.

The body keeps score of a long process

Fertility treatment is often described in emotional terms, and rightly so. But it can be physically demanding as well. Injections, scans, procedures, disrupted sleep and the tension of waiting can leave people feeling stiff, sore and exhausted. Recognising that physical strain is a first step towards looking after yourself through it.

Why some people turn to acupuncture

Acupuncture has been used within traditional Chinese medicine for a very long time, including for reproductive wellbeing. In TCM theory, it helps Qi and Blood move smoothly through the body and towards the reproductive organs. Those are traditional ideas, not proven medical facts, and we describe them that way.

In practice, many people value acupuncture as a chance to lie still, breathe slowly and let go of tension for a while. Some report that they feel more relaxed afterwards, although experiences differ.

About IVF research

Acupuncture around embryo transfer has been studied, but results are mixed and research is still under way. We therefore do not suggest that acupuncture improves the odds of conceiving or of IVF working.

Simple ways to ease everyday strain

  1. Gentle walking or stretching, if your doctor is happy for you to stay active.
  2. Warmth on tight shoulders or the lower back for comfort.
  3. A regular bedtime routine to protect rest where you can.
  4. Talking with someone you trust about how you are feeling.

Working with your medical team

People come to us with irregular cycles, PCOS or unexplained infertility, and at different stages of IVF. Some begin sessions a few months before a cycle; others start during treatment. Whatever your situation, your fertility specialist should guide your care, and it is important to tell them about acupuncture and any herbal medicine.

Gentle support in Lane Cove and Freshwater

Our practitioners offer calm, unhurried sessions for people who would like relaxation-focused support while they go through fertility treatment.
